A head and shoulders portrait of Joseph Moxon (1627-1700) who was born in Wakefield. Moxon was an instrument and globemaker, map publisher, map seller and engraver in London. He was appointed hydrographer to Charles II in 1670 and was also a Fellow of the Royal Society. This portrait is laid trimmed close and laid within a paper frame, with small areas of manuscript reinstatement to the portrait itself. A pencil notation on the paper suggests the portrait was engraved by Frederick Hendrick Van Hove. Trimmed close and mounted.
