An attractive and unusual historical map based on one by Ortelius and here published in Georgius Hornius' classical atlas "Accuratissima Orbis Antiqui Delineatio" produced by Jan Jansson. This curious map features an outline of the Indian Ocean coastlines from Eastern Africa to South East Asia encompassing the so-called Erythraean Sea, as the Indian Ocean was known to the Ancient World. Sea monsters and sailing ships decorate the ocean itself and an attractive title cartouche contains an acknowledgement to the author, 'Nunc Vero ab Abrah. Ortelio' and reference to one, Arrianus, thought to be an ancient chronicler of voyages. The map includes a number of interesting features - a land-bridge seems to join the Malayan peninsula near present-day Singapore to Sumatra and inset maps, at top left, show the Moroccan atlantic coast and, top right, the North Pole - Hyperborei, as a large island with waterways separating it from northern Europe and Asia and North America, here named "Atlantis".
