The second map of Asia to appear in Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" from 1575 onwards. Cum Priulegio is not apparent in the lower left corner and the island of "farfana" in the upper right corner is shown with a lower case 'f' - all confirming this is the second plate . Cartographically the map is based on Ortelius' own wall map of the continent of 1567, and maps by Gastaldi and Albufeda are also cartographic sources. A basic outline of Japan is accompanied by other smaller islands and a very large Nova Guinea is visible at lower right. A nice, Latin text example of this important map of Asia from the "first modern atlas". An attractive example of a renowned and sought after map.
