When Johann Baptist Vrients took over publication of Ortelius'"Theatrum..." he incorporated a number of newly, and very finely, engraved map plates into the atlas. Among these were a large map of England, Wales and Ireland and this of Ireland alone. Based on Elstrack's extremely rare version of Baptist Boazio's map, Ireland is shown with north to the right and in greater detail than ever before. A large title cartouche appears at top centre and ships and sea monsters decorate the sea. A panel of text, at top right, referring to St. Patrick identifies this as a the second state of the plate; the first having a dedication to James I. As an extra-large plate this rare map, when usually found, has damage at old folds or the margins; this example has reinforcement to the centrefold with expert repairs to the side margins and left hand neatline. Boazio's map is without doubt one of the most decorative and sought after maps of Ireland.
