A decorative and sought-after map from the "first modern atlas" - Abraham Ortelius's "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". This edition with German text to the verso. Ortelius drew from the most up-to-date reports and, although the British Isles map in the atlas derived from Mercator, this map with slightly different cartography, was provided by the first important Welsh cartographer - Humfredo Lhuyd. Lhuyd's map shows an elongated south-west corner and a somewhat curiously shaped Wales (despite Lhuyd being from Denbigh). County boundaries are not marked and there is no differentiation between towns and villages (with the exception of London). This distinctive map has a large figured titlepiece at top left and mileage scale at top right while sailing ships and sea monsters appear in the surrounding seas and a vaguely defined Ireland shows no geographical detail but is populated by four sheep. Paper a little discoloured but overall a good example with attractive full original colour.
