A very attractive example of this famous map of Ireland - one of the earliest of the island alone, and certainly the most detailed early depiction - published in Abraham Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", generally acknowledged as the first 'modern' atlas. Oriented with north to the right, the detail derives from Mercator's influential and now unobtainable wall map depiction of the British Isles. This distinctive and boldly engraved map has French text on the reverse. Large strap-work cartouches frame the title and mileage scale while panels of text include descriptions of the Arran Isles and Lough Erne. One small area of surface abrasion but attractive full original colour.
