A good example of one of the most sought-after and well known pre-Cook maps of the continent. This large scale map shows the northern, western and southern coasts of Australia, south coasts of Tasmania, and west coast of New Zealand. Published one hundred years after Abel Tasman's voyage, on which the detail is predominantly based, the map indicates the limited extent of European knowledge and has two large panels of text describing the map's sources and the country itself. Stating "It is impossible to conceive a Country that promises fairer from its Scituation, than this of Terra Australis; no longer incognita, as this map demonstrates ..." the text continues by comparing the continent's location with other richly endowed parts of the world, including South Africa with gems and gold, South America with silver and gems and so on, implying potential vast wealth for "whoever perfectly discovers & settles it". The map appeared in Harris's "Navigations ..." for which the prominent London mapmaker Emanuel Bowen was commissioned to prepare a set of maps illustrating the voyages described therein. This example trimmed close at top edge with protective margin added.
