Abraham Ortelius is best known for the maps in the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the so-called "first modern atlas" of the world, which represented the most up-to-date records of the world as known around 1570. However his personal interest in the classical world led him to produce a series of maps, added to the atlas as an addendum, the "Parergon" illustrating historical legends and describing those parts of Europe and the Mediterranean world as known in ancient times. This finely engraved map, oriented with north to the left shows the "boot" of Italy, the southern promontories of Calabria, Apulia and Otranto, identifying main settlements with their original latinised names. Ortelius' atlas maps appeared in a number of editions with verso text in a variety of different European languages, describing the area shown with its ancient history. This example, with particularly striking original colour, is of added interest as the only English text edition.
