This magnificent, Victorian map of Bristol with mythological beast cartouche and decorated borders, appears in John Tallis' atlas, published to coincide with the Great Exhibition of 1851. The map was drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin with illustrations by H. Winkles - these include attractive vignette views of Broad Quay, Redcliff Church, High cross on College Green, Clifton Gate, Clifton itself and the south side of Bristol Cathedral. The large double-page format of this attractive map allows for considerable details to be shown; streets and docks are clearly named, and the railways are also shown. The proposed suspension bridge is also marked across the River Avon. A little wear at old centrefold but a good example of a fine map.
