Johann Baptist Vrients' magnificent map of England and Wales. This finely engraved map of England, Wales and Ireland, together with a family tree of English monarchs from the Norman conquest to James the First, is one of the largest and finest of the time. Regarded as one of the most desirable maps of Great Britain due to its wealth of information, unity of design, importance to the history of cartography, and flambuoyant engraved touches such as sea-monsters and mermaids. In bold and exquisitely applied colour and in good condition, this map forms the cornerstone of any collection of British Isles maps. The map first appeared in 1606 and this is state two of the map, without the dedication to James I . Johann Baptist Vrients, a printer in Antwerp, had bought the copperplates for Abraham Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ..." in 1601 and published his own editions of the "Theatrum ..." (including the only English language edition in 1606). After Vrients' death in 1612 the plates were sold to the Plantijn firm. Of the new maps added to the "Theatrum ..." whilst Vrients oversaw publication, this of England and Wales is perhaps one of the most decorative and sought-after.
