An unusual and scarce map of the London environs. The map is set within an oval design with three circular discs of text at each corner describing the region; "A Description of London. London so call'd as some conjecture from Llongd=in the British Word. Tis seated in a pleasent Valley upon a genteel rising bank in an excellent air. The City of London with its Suburbs and places adjacent is from East to West Seven Mile and a half & from St Leonard and Shoreditch to the fathest end of Blackmore Street is 2 Mile & a half. By the vast Customs daily paid for all Merchandise Imported & Exported may be guess' the vast Trade of this City amounting to about 300,000 a year in King Cha. 2nd Reign. The River Thames on which this great City is seated is more commodious for Navagation than perhaps any other in the World, over wch. is a Stonebridge of 19 Arches esteemed ye finest in Europe". Although unsigned we believe the map was published by George Willdey, best known for his large format wall maps, but who also produced folding screens decorated with both large and smaller map publications similar to this and with a distinctive . This page has no evidence of any folds, suggesting a separate publication, has wide margins and is in good condition. COPAC does not list any examples of the map, nor is the map listed in Howgego's "Printed Maps Of London" (there is an entry c.1720 for Willdey's map of "...Thirty Miles Round London").
