Belsia, Vulgo La Beausse : W. & J. Blaeu

A good example of a finely engraved and attractively coloured map from Willem and Joan Blaeu's "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" - one of the finest atlas productions of the seventeenth century. The Blaeu family, from about 1630, were regarded as the finest map and atlas publishers until around 1670 when the family warehouse burnt down. The maps are known for their fine presentation, detail and elaborate decorative cartouches and vignettes. This detailed map shows the area between Orléans and Chartres, the two great cathedral cities in north-central France. There is a coat of arms and the cartouche is elaborately decorated with the figure of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. She is surrounded by cherubs, golden grain bushels and a loaded cart pulled by two dragons. Latin text to verso.
