A charming woodcut plan of the Bodensee - Lake Constance. Sebastian Munster was a significant figure in mid-century European enlightenment. As a mathematician, linguist, geographer and historian his work included a notable edition of Ptolemy's classical "Geographia" to which "modern" maps were added including the first attempt to map the four continents individually. Munster went on to create the "Cosmographia ..." first published in 1544 comprising extensive text, double-page maps and innumerable plans, maps, views and illustrations of major cities, parts of Europe and the rest of the known world, historical events and so on. Here the lake is surrounded by mountains and towns shown in profile views. This fine view is set in a page of German text and itself measures 16 x 11.5 cms.
