Michael Drayton (1563-1631) was an English poet who composed the "Poly-Olbion"- a series of poems, or songs, extolling the beauties of the English and Welsh countryside, first published in 1612. It was illustrated with one of the most unusual series of county maps ever published - including this attractive 'title-less' map centred on the county of Warwickshire, the series probably engraved by William Hole. The map illustrated folklore and mythology of the English countryside with rustic vignettes, river gods, nymphs and shepherds, hills and forests finely depicted. Few places are identified but the map does name The Forest of Arden, Coventry and Warwick, Vale of Redhorse and the rivers. This example is slightly age-toned and has close trimmed side margins reinforced, the right just losing negligible printed neatline, often seen with this series.
