A beautifully designed and engraved map of the area around Dumbarton and southern Loch Lomond from the Blaeus' Scottish atlas based on the surveys of Timothy Pont. A finely engraved and very detailed map decorated with baroque cartouches for the title and a scale, and attractive original colour. The map was drawn by Timothy Pont (c.1564-c.1614), who spent a number of years surveying Scotland in great detail and at his own expense. In June 1654 Joan Blaeu, the renowned Amsterdam map publisher received a 14-year licence for publication of the first atlas devoted to Scotland from Oliver Cromwell. This example, on good paper is in good condition and only the lightest print offset so often seen in this publication. Pont's map appeared in the first atlas of Scotland, volume V of Blaeu's monumental 'Atlas Novus'.
