Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer was a pilot and navigator from Enkhuizen, on the Zuider Zee, and was responsible for the production of the first atlas of printed charts of the western European coasts. The charts were artistically designed and engraved by some of the finest craftsmen of the time. The "Spieghel Der Zeevaerdt" was commercially very popular among landlubbers, with editions in Latin, French, German and English in addition to the original Dutch, but less so with sailors themselves and the charts were later redrawn and re-engraved in a smaller, more practical format. Nevertheless, these "waggoners" as they are sometimes termed are now rare and sought-after charts. This is a fine example of the first edition of the chart covering the Swedish Skagerrack coast around Marstrand.
