A large-scale wall map of North America from the Canadian border and the Great Lakes south to Panama and the entire West Indies, with the United States as its main focus. Jacob Monk's map provides a wealth of detail and illustrates clearly the westward development of United States culture. The vast tracts west of the Mississippi show a handful of established States and have trails and major routes marked; the general locations of innumerable Native American tribes are indicated and text annotations comment on recent events of note. A large area in California is designated as "Gold Region". Alongside the internal detail an inset world map to the lower left shows trade routes and a table of inland and other journey lengths contributes to the range of practical information provided. Vignettes of sailing ships dot the seas and the whole is set within an elaborate floral border. Maps of this size, intended as practical wall hangings, are rarely found in good condition. This example is in appreciably better state than usual, with colours reasonably fresh and laid on modern canvas. A fascinating and decorative record of a developing nation.
