Orbis Terrarum Nova Et Accuratissima Tabula ... : J. Van Loon / M. Pitt

A rare and decorative double hemisphere map of the world produced by Jan van Loon and published first in his own, and rarely seen, atlas of sea charts. Based on the influential map of Nicolas Visscher of 1658, the map shows typical mid-century cartographic outlines with a vaguely defined and much reduced southern continent. The Australian and New Zealand coastlines reflect Tasman's voyages of the previous decade, California is shown as a large island and there is no indication of the existence of the Great Lakes of North America. The spheres are surrounded by traditional allegorical scenes, as originally designed by Nicholas Berchem for Visscher, showing the rape of Persephone, Zeus in an eagle-drawn chariot, Poseidon and other marine characters, and Demeter receiving the fruits of the earth. In this second state, with the arms of Charles II, the map appeared in Moses Pitt's short lived "English Atlas". This was the largest and most impressive English atlas production of the seventeenth century. A fine example with attractive hand colour.
