De Stadt Tripolis. The City Of Tripolie : O.Dapper / J.Ogilby / P.Van Der Aa

An attractive view of Tripoli from the water with the walled city in the background and a ship under siege in the foreground. This copperplate view, with an English as well as Dutch title, was published in John Ogilby's work "Africa", based on the Dutch publication of two years earlier, by Jacob van Meurs, of Olfert Dapper's "Naukeurige Beschrijvinghe Der Afrikaensche ...". Following Ogilby's publication a number of the plates later appeared in Leiden to be published by Pieter Van Der Aa in his work, "La Galerie Agreable Du Monde". This particular example of the Tripoli view has especially wide margins and a blank verso and was perhaps published in composite form by Van Der Aa just before "La Galerie ..." was released as an entity. Koeman's "Atlantes Neerlandici I" does list this Tripoli plate, but does so with a French (rather than English) title after the Dutch. An interesting view of this historical port with a complicated publication history.
