Engraved by Daniel van Bremden, whose signature appears at lower right, this is the elaborate titlepage (with German text) to the sixth part of Jansson's "Novus Atlas", the 'Water World'. The titlepage had been newly engraved in 1650 for the fifth part/volume of the work intended to include maps from the ancient world, hence the title panel being flanked by figures in Roman armour. Above appear to be Moses with the ten commandments and Aaron at his side. Below the panel of text is the seated figure suggested by Shirley to be the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III. It is only the two scenes at the bottom of the page that allude to the contents of this particular volume - Dutch ships are seen through the architectural surround, and the importance of maps and navigation to their trade is also referred to. Protective right margin added.
