The titlepage to Bellin's "Hydrographie Francoise" is enclosed within an elegant surround that incorporates maps, charts and images of hydrography, along with the winds, so important to navigation, at the top of the page. A further illustration inside the border shows three prominent fleur de lis and a shining sun. France had been the first country whose government had commissioned an official survey of the coasts to improve their own navigational certainty and thus security for their trade and commerce around the world. The "Hydrographie Francoise" was first published in 1756 and such was its success that it was republished for many years afterwards. This titlepage was engraved in 1765 and is, unusually, dated in the lower corner by Arrivet. Restoration to marginal tears with some paper reinforcement, not affecting the printed area.
