With a blank central panel ready for overprinting this titlepage bears the imprint of Schenk and Valk. The form was originally used as the titlepage to "Atlas Novus, Sive Theatrum Orbis Terrarum In Quo Hispaniae, Italiae, Asiae, Africae, Nec-non Americae Tabulae & Descriptiones Luculent Issimae. Tomus Tertius" by Jansson and shows allegories of the four continents flanking the central stage. The grand architectural surround is surmounted by a coat of arms. The Schenk family, with co-publishers, the Valks, were among the most prolific and best known publishers of eighteenth century Amsterdam, issuing prints, maps, books and atlases. Their work was invariably finely presented, though primarily reissued from other map-makers' printing plates, including Visscher, De Wit, Jansson and others.
