The titlepage to Volume I of Moses Pitt's "English Atlas" that is devoted to "The Places next the North-Pole; As Also Of Muscovy, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, And their several Dependances. With A General Introduction to Geography, and a Large Index, containing the Longitudes and Latitudes of all the particular Places, thereby the Reader to find them readily in the several Maps". Oxford, particularly the Sheldonian Theatre, provides the
backdrop to Pitt's copperplate illustration and the text is printed in both red and black. This example also has the addition of red manuscript ruling, perhaps by the printer or seller, that is occasionally seen on English map publications of this period. Pitt had intended a multi-volume atlas in the tradition of earlier Dutch atlases. He began using and updating existing copperplates in he possession of the Dutch publishing firm of Johannes Jansson van Waesberge, son-in-law, heir and successor to Jan Jansson. Pitt's atlas was first published in Oxford in 1680 but was incomplete with only four volumes of maps and a fifth of text actually having been produced. Pitt suffered a sentence in the debtor's prison as a result of his attempted publication. In good, clean condition with red ruling as issued.
