Wilton ... : R.Dawson / Parliamentary Report

An attractive and detailed nineteenth-century plan of Wilton that was published in parliamentary reports concerning the 1832 Act. Reform Act 1832 was an Act of Parliament that introduced wide-ranging changes to the electoral system of the United Kingdom. The act was designed to "take effectual Measures for correcting diverse Abuses that have long prevailed in the Choice of Members to serve in the Commons House of Parliament." The Reform Act's chief objective was the reduction of the number of nomination boroughs, thus accurate mapping of the new boroughs was required. The resultant maps are detailed, concise, accurate and yet not unattractive. Using the Ordnance Survey and Robert Kearsley Dawson's survey work as their geographical foundation, the maps use original outline colour to show the boundaries of the proposed boroughs and the boundaries of the parishes and townships. A mileage scale is also given and allows for considerable detail to be shown - major routes and other physical features are depicted where possible. The maps are frequently lithographically signed by Robert Dawson and the name of the lithographer may also appear.
