A Plan Of Cumberland Harbour On Ye So[uth] Side Of Cuba ... : P.Durell

"A Plan Of Cumberland Harbour On Ye So. Side Of Cuba Formerly Call'd Walltenam Bay Most Humbly Dedicated To His Royal Highness William Augustus Drake Of Cumberland &c. &c. &c. By Cap. Phi: Durell 1741". A detailed and separately published map of Cumberland Bay in Cuba, better-known today as Guantanamo Bay. Engraved and sold by P.Fourdinier in London. A key is given at upper right with the title in a decorative surround at upper left and the mileage scale at lower right. Philip Durrell's eye-witness accounts of events during the War of Jenkins' Ear provided the interested public in London with up-to-date news. The British siege of the harbour in 1741 under the command of Admiral Edward Vernon (who was unsuccessful and was eventually forced to withdraw) resulted in the short-lived anglicisation of the harbour's name (presumably also true for Durell's self-aggrandising nomenclature with the appearance of "Durrell's Cove" on the map). This broadsheet map is scarce; the British Library holds an original manuscript version of the map and this printed version, but they are the only institutional examples listed on COPAC. Slight evidence of old folds, otherwise in generally good condition.
