Samuel Augustus Mitchell's "New Universal Atlas ..." comprised finely
engraved and delicately hand-coloured maps and plans of all areas of the world.
This detailed map of Peru and Bolivia illustrates clearly the limits of
knowledge of the area from Truxillo south to La Plata. Coastal placenames, river systems and major towns are identified but the area north west of is shown as a vaguely defined plateau.
