A charming miniature map of Guiana and the Windward Islands. The map was published in London in "The British Colonial Pocket Atlas. A Complete Series Of Maps Illustrating The Geography Of The British Empire" using John Bartholomew's maps. The atlas was originally dedicated to The Right Honourable The Earl of Rosebery, LL.D., President of the Scottish Geographical Society "in respectful recognition of his earnest labours towards imperial federation". Published at the height of Empire these maps were intended to bring the geographical breadth of Empire, thus emphasising the power and status of Britain, to the reader at home. "The importance of this knowledge of our various Colonies and possessions with their vast and to a great extent undeveloped resources is now difficult to exaggerate. To the merchant and the capitalist it is also surely necessary that this knowledge should be familiar so that they may know the resources and the requirements of those countries abroad, where there is so much scope for their trade and enterprise. It would therefore seem only necessary that these countries should be known to the British people in order that they may be occupied, and their wealth developed and utilised for the people's good".
