A detailed map of Pompeii published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. The Society was founded by John, Earl Russell, and Henry Brougham, later Lord Chancellor of England in 1827. The Society's main purpose was to encourage universal literacy by publishing numbers of books of good quality that would be affordable to all. These town plans were published in perhaps the grandest of the Society's publications - their atlas entitled "Maps Of The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge", first issued by Baldwin and Cradock, and then re-issued by other publishers, including Chapman and Hall and latterly Edward Stanford. This map includes a panorama of Pompeii in the present time at the lower edge identifying such features as the temples and the baths with Vesuvius and Naples in the distance. An inset plan of the coast and vicinity of Vesuvius is also included. The map was drawn by W.B.Clarke and engraved by T.E.Nicholson.
