The Achievement Of Our Soveraigne ... The Theatre Of The Empire : J. Hondius / J. Speed

A magnificent pair of engravings - the titlepage and frontispiece from John Speed's monumental atlas of the British Isles. The magnificent coat of arms of James I dominates the heraldic frontispiece - "The Achievement Of Our Soveraigne King James As He Nowe Beareth With The Armes Of The Severall Kings That Have Aunciently Raigned Within His Nowe Dominions". Around this central panel are 24 smaller shields of parts of the realm from ancient times including shields denoting the Romans, Saxons and Normans, amongst others. The page is signed by Jodocus Hondius. The accompanying titlepage to "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine" is based on the architectural framework that had appeared on an earlier Ortelius titlepage and includes, in a somewhat more ornate form, the figures of a Romane, a Britaine, a Saxon, a Dane and a Norman - each representing, according to Shirley in "Courtiers And Cannibals", "the conquerors (or supposed inhabitants) of Great Britain and they are each garbed according to their epoch". Two plates joined, as issued, with protective margin to right side where engraved area just trimmed.
