Essay D'Une Carte Reduite Contenant Les Parties Connues Du Globe : N. Bellin

A well detailed and very decorative large-scale world map, showing the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia in different outline colours. On the left and right the Solomon islands and eastern edge of Russia are shown twice, for a fully comprehensive view. Australia appears joined to New Guinea and with only the pre-Cook coastlines clearly marked; similarly New Zealand is a single coastline, after Tasman. An elaborate compass-rose takes the place of Antarctica at the base of the page. Inland, borders, major rivers (including one suggesting the North American Great Lakes had access directly to the Pacific), towns and mountain ranges are detailed. The title cartouche is surmounted by a coat of arms, and decorated with a globe and navigational equipment. An attractive and clear summary of the world's coastlines prior to Cook's voyages of a few years later.
