Description Du Pais De Brie : J.Le Clerc / D.De Templeux

A charming map of the Brie region. The two square spires of the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris can be seen within the detailed city of Paris; nearby the fortress of le Bois de Vincennes is shown, later site of Paris' only zoo. The name of the artist, Damien de Templeux, is given in the lower left-hand corner. Le Clerc was one of the fourth generation of a family of booksellers and printers. Taking refuge in Tours with his family after trouble in Liege, he worked with M. Bouguereau, plates from whose "Theatre" formed the core of his own atlas. Le Clerc died in 1621 or 1622, but his atlas continued to be published after his death, bearing the address of his widow.
