Sir Francis Drake (born 1540) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator and politician of the Elizebethan era. His achievements included acting as second-in-command against the Spanish Armada in 1588, and completion of the second circumnavigation of the world in 1580. Raiding Spanish ships and settlements in South America along the way, Drake entered the Pacific probably through the Strait of Magellan. Claiming an area on the Pacific coast of North America for Britain as "Nova Albion", Drake's last remaining ship returned home via the Moluccas and Cape of Good Hope. The written accounts of his voyage were classified by the Queen on his return, to keep them out of Spanish hands.
