An attractive example of this important map/chart covering the United States south-east coast from River May to the Albermarle River and Cape Hatteras. With an inset detailing the Ashley and Cooper River mouths, this is one of the earliest maps to focus on the Carolinas at a large scale. Although the title attributes the detail to the Frenchman Nicolas Sanson, probably because it appeared in a Dutch version of his series of maps, the detail is actually taken from English sources, notably the map by Thornton, Morden and Lea. Fully backed with archivist's tissue to protect against verdigris degradation, this is a good example of an increasingly rare map - a cornerstone of the region's cartography.
