French text to verso. An early, decorative map of the area originally called Tartary, encompassing all of Siberia and northern Asiatic Russia, Central Asia and including Korea defined as an island. The map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius in his distinctive style with large strap-work cartouches and silk-effect sea shading. The Great Wall of China is indicated and a note in the Arctic Ocean records the voyages of William Barents of 1594 to 1596. Further illustrations include scenes of a Mongol encampment and Tartars. A fine copperplate engraving with clear original colour.
