In about 1678 Herman Moll, a German, came to London and worked as an engraver for other publishers in the city. He soon set up his own business publishing atlases and also separate maps of all parts of the world. His work was varied, ranging from miniature maps to large very decorative wall maps. This attractive and interesting map of the Caspian Sea was published in Moll's "Atlas Minor". This work was first issued in 1729 with this particular map coming from an edition of c.1740. An inset view of the "City of Astracan" appears across the bottom of the map while the "City of Terky" room is also shown in inset at upper left and the "City of Derbent" above the title cartouche. Coastal towns are named along the western coast of the Caspian Sea and the title makes reference to the source of the map, "Drawn by the Czar's Special Command by Carl van Verden in the Year 1719, 1720 and 1721. This Exact Copy is done by H.Moll".
