Abingdon To Gloucester and Monmouth. This is just one of many charming road maps, a reduced-sized version from John Ogilby's "Britannia", covering the main roads and their cross routes around England and Wales. The maps originally appeared in "A Pocket Guide to the English Traveller", and were engraved by Thomas Gardner of which virtually nothing seems known. This particular ribbon-strip style road map covers the area from Abingdon to St Davids, with the route continuing onto Monmouth. The elegant map copies Ogilby's folio originals at a much more convenient size and format, as the preface to the atlas states: "As the original plates are in large Sheets, the general Use of them has been hitherto lost, and the Book rather an Entertainment for a Traveller within Doors, than a guide to him upon the Road.... But this, besides its being the original work in Miniature ... tis presum'd will be thought much more useful to the Ends those books were intended, and deserve the Title of A Pocket-Guide to the English Traveller."
