Mappe-Monde Dressee Suivant Les Nouvelles Relations Et Assujettie Aux Observations Astronomiques : R. De Vaugondy / C. F. Delamarche

Here is De Vaugondy's well known double-hemisphere world map in almost its final form, published by DelaMarche. Captain James Cook's discoveries in Australia and New Zealand, unknown in the map's early editions, are shown, without mention or even evidence of the Englishman's tracks - only Tasman's are seen near New Zealand! An advertisement in the lower cartouche indicates that the details for the Southern Hemisphere were made available by the Duc De Croy in 1774. The South Pacific also shows an interesting feature in that the stippled outlines of the European antipodean coastlines are indicated. Pedley's listing of Vaugondy maps indicates that she was unable to examine this edition of the map - indicative of its relative scarcity.
