Le Royaume D'Angleterre ... : J.B. Nolin / V. Coronelli

A fascinating and rare map of England and Wales with an inset detail of the Channel Islands and adjacent French coasts. The map was prepared by the French mapmaker Jean Baptiste Nolin and Vincenzo Coronelli, the renowned Italian mapmaker who spent time in Paris before commencing his great publishing activities in Venice. Of particular interest is the map's dedication, prominent in the titlepiece to ".... Jacques II Roy D'Angleterre, D'Escosse et D'Irlande ..." referring to The Royal Pretender, James II, then "over the water" in France and reflecting the Auld Alliance, and French sympathy for the claimants to the Scottish throne. A further unusual feature of the map is that it has been laid on fine cotton, in the early nineteenth century, and has the trade label of Paris mapseller Auguste Logerot, active around 1850. This suggests that the map was sold, separately, but whether sold as a "current" map from stock - in which case it was very out-of-date; an example of antiquarian cartography - an interesting and early reflection of the demand for "collectable" maps; or, to satisfy supporters of French and Scottish linked politics, we cannot tell. This is the rarely seen first state of the map before "corigee et augmente par le Sr.Tillemon". With an old, lightly inked, graticule of lines of longitude and latitude and lightly age-toned.
