untitled but verso Tabula V Asiae : C. Ptolemy / L. Fries

This attractive map appeared in the Lorenz Fries' edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia" edited by Michael Servetus and published in Lyon. Ptolemy's cartographic tabulations of Roman times were recreated as maps around 1400 and defined the world as known around 100 AD. This map, the fifth of the Asia maps, shows the area from Mesopotamia, Armenia and the Gulf, to the Caspian and Carmania - present-day Iran. Minor and indiscernible repairs to old centrefold wear but a pleasing example of the earliest representation of the region.
