In between Sir Christopher Wren's plan of the 1660's and the completion of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's great project in 1870, there were a number of proposals to build a Thames Embankment. This, from James Walker, enabled an increase in cross London road traffic without narrowing the river or reducing access to the existing riverbanks. The plan extends from Westminster to Blackfriars Bridge so is oriented with north to the right. Arched viaducts, set in the river with short bridges, allowed connections to existing roads. Lift bridges are shown and these would have allowed tall masted vessels to proceed. After political infighting (the plan was presented to Parliament), no further progress was made. Eventually Bazalgette's masterpiece was built to incorporate vitally needed new sewers and the new District Railway.
