A decorative copy of one of the earliest detailed panoramas of London originally engraved on four copperplates by Claes Jans Visscher, about 1616, in Amsterdam. This example being an etched copy published in 1846 by Anne Evans & Son in London and identified as such by the mis-lettering of the original printer's name Iudovicus Hondius as "tndo vicne Bondius". It is thought the view was derived from one by John Norden about 1600 and extends from Whitehall to St. Katharines Dock with good detail of the City, London Bridge and the Southbank where the theatres of The Globe and Swan are identified. The engraving lacks the finesse of the original and copies many of that version's inaccuracies but is nevertheless a spectacular and scarce record of late Elizabethan London. The title appears in a central banner held by two angels, more angels blow trumpets with banners showing the Royal arms and those of the City of London. Panels of rather unclear text appear at each upper corner. Unfortunately, printed on poor quality paper there is some surface cracking but the whole image has been archivally backed for protection and carefully coloured to spectacular and very attractive effect.
