A famous early map of modern day Carolina and Georgia engraved by, and published in, Jodocus Hondius's issues of Mercator's "Atlas Sive Cosmographiae" from 1606. It is a truly spectacular engraving, with distinctive latticework cartouches, exaggerated geographical features, and numerous decorative embellishments enlivened by attractive hand colour. Hondius's geography is based on earlier European maps, predominantly White's Virginia and Le Moyne's Florida, further disseminating these predecessors' errors. Published by de Bry, those maps were accompanied by illustrations repeated here, such as vignettes of a turkey, Indian figures, villages, canoe, and so on. A good example of a Dutch text edition.
