Untitled [Northern South America] : B. Bordone

click here to view a large version in a separate window

From Bordone's Isolario - an attempt to chart the islands of the world - a simple representation showing the northern coast of South America set in a page of Italian text. Four places are marked - chancite, cuztana, maziatambal and paria - and the region is shown as mountainous. The islands of iamaiqua (Jamaica), spagnola (Hispaniola), and a group that roughly correspond to the Antilles are shown in the Caribbean Sea. This strange and important map, with its suggestion of a waterway between north and south America, is one of the earliest available to focus on any part of the New World mainland.
