A Chart Of The Islands .. Tchu-San ... Coast of China, Generally : A. Dalrymple / Sir John Barrow

The first British embassy to the Emperor of China, 1792-4, was led by the First Earl Macartney whose comptroller, cartographer Sir John Barrow, was later a co-founder of the Royal Geographical Society. The official report by Sir George Staunton, in which this chart appeared, was published in 1797. As can be seen from the tracks shown here, the ships of the Embassy were engaged in a detailed marine survey of Tchu-San, south-east of Shanghai, and other islands in the vicinity. There is an inset plan of Tschu-San harbour and an all round landfall. The purposes of the Embassy were to establish, by negotiation with the Emperor, a British trading post and a permanent embassy, at the same time easing restrictions on Anglo-Chinese trade.
