Sketch Of A Journey From Hang Tchoo-Foo ... Canton In China : Sir John Barrow

The first British Embassy to the Emperor of China, 1792-4, was led by the First Earl Macartney whose comptroller Sir John Barrow, cartographer was later a co-founder of the Royal Geographical Society. The official report by Sir George Staunton, in which this chart appeared, was published in 1797. This map represents the overland journey, by road, from Hang-Tchoo-Foo to Canton, by road, river, portage and canal. There are many fascinating observations on the people, crops and terrain encountered. In some areas the population is described as "very great." The purposes of the Embassy were to establish, by negotiation with the Emperor, a British trading post and a permanent embassy, at the same time easing restrictions on Anglo-Chinese trade.
