The Bristol Rose. A charming and rare Victorian souvenir showing scenes of Bristol and Clifton. This delicate item of ephemera is presented in its original, finely decorated envelope in "as new" condition. The souvenir Rose series was published by Joseph, Myers & Co in London but printed by C. Adler in Hamburg where each was die-cut to be folded into a small envelope. The publisher describes the Rose thus, ... "This beautiful ornament represents on the exterior a splendid full blown rose with its graceful form and incomparable tints. At first sight, the flower seems to be a piece of thick cardboard, but by carefully introducing the nail between the folds of paper, it will be found capable of being opened again and again, until it attains somewhat the form of a circle, which is covered on every side with beautifully executed steel-engravings of various edifices and other objects of general interest ...... These pretty ornaments serve as excellent SOUVENIRS of the remarkable places which they represent, and form at the same time very suitable and pleasing presents for tourists and others to carry back to their friends at home." Joseph, Myers & Co published around one hundred Roses displaying British and European cities, catering for an increasingly affluent and mobile population whose visits to spas, seaside towns or Grand Tour destinations created a new market for keepsakes and gifts. Cities further afield included New York, Montreal, Havana and Melbourne. This Rose is a rare and vulnerable piece of ephemera and of added interest as it retains its original promotional list of available views issued by the publisher.
