Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Frederick Trench, M. P. proposed, in 1824, the setting up of the New Quay Company. This was reported in Edmund Burke's "Annual Register Of World Events" of the time. There it was written that he(Trench) proposed to build "A kind of esplanade or terrace, to extend from London Bridge to, Blackfriars, and thence towards Westminster Bridge..." Warehouses were to be constructed under the terrace. The plan was thwarted by the riverside interests of the day. Within a few decades, Parliament had approved of Joseph Bazalgette's ambitious and ultimately successful plans for the Thames Embankment. A detailed and interesting map.
