The proposed Leeds and Selby Canal, bypassing the winding River Aire, was intended to save transit time for freight between Leeds and the coastal ports . However, the Parliamentary Bill was defeated and the shorter Selby Canal was built to Haddesley on the Aire. By way of further historical interest, the map is decorated with ancient remains, including a coin.
