Shropshire : R. Morden

Probably prepared in the early 1690's for Camden's "Britannia" but thought too small, this series appeared from 1701 in a sequence of publications including "The New Description and State Of England" and "Magna Britannia". Morden's maps are detailed and well engraved, usually with decorated title pieces. This particular example has been printed on above-size paper allowing for contemporary extra-illustration in the form of carefully drawn and painted coats of arms of the county's leading families to surround the map. Here, 68 devices are identified. A most unusual example of an interesting map.
