An attractive garland cartouche decorates this map, 'Engraved for the General Magazine of Arts & Sciences, for W.Owen at Temple Bar 1761'. The hundreds are shown, and the key or explanation denotes borough towns, market towns and post stages. Emanuel Bowen , a Welshman, produced a large number of important maps and was geographer to both George II and Louis XV of France. Benjamin Martin, mathematician, instrument maker and compiler, announced , in 1754, his plans for a complete library of the arts and sciences. In January 1755 his new monthly magazine appeared, containing county maps from the beginning, many engraved by Emanuel Bowen. The map is rather unusual as the hundreds are given letters and not numbers explained in a key. Post stages are shown.
